The legal tender here is Hong Kong dollar
(HK$); a dollar equals to 100 cents. Notes, having denominations
of $10, $20, $50, $100, $500, and $1,000, are issued by three
private banks, namely the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation,
the Standard Chartered Bank and the Bank of China. Coins, having
denominations of 10cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, $1, $2, $5 and
$10, are issued by the government.
Traveler's cheques can be cashed at banks and moneychangers.
Major banks open from 9am to 4:30pm between Mondays and Fridays; 9am to 12:30pm
on Saturdays; and closed on Sundays and public holidays. Banks, moneychangers
and hotels all charge commissions for currency exchange.
Credit cards (Visa, Master, American Express and Diner's Club)
are widely accepted in retail shops and restaurants. Some credit cards (Visa,
Master, Amex and Express) can also be used to withdraw cash from Automatic
Teller Machines (ATMs) conveniently located throughout the territory (A
financial charge is required). Some ATMs provide 24-hour services.
